THOUGHTS WHILE STITCHING

Excerpts from “Comfort from a Country Quilt” by Reba McEntire

“... Have you ever made a quilt?  I have.  It’s one of the most therapeutic and calming things I’ve ever done.

… Both my grandmothers made quilts, my mama did, and my aunt Jeannie did.  I loved to open that big box at Christmastime knowing it was a quilt that one of them had made.  …Even as a young girl, I knew a quilt was a gift I would cherish always.

… I feel very blessed to have received one of Mama’s quilts.  I sleep under it every night I’m home.   It doesn’t match the fancy comforter we bought in Los Angeles, but it feels better than anything you can imagine.  Just because I know my mama made it just for me.”

MESSAGE FROM PRESIDENT LIZ MESEC - “BIZ FROM LIZ”

It was a great pleasure to see all of you in the Transportation Building!  Finally!  We will keep working on the noise and the seating so all can see.  The Tavern Board will keep working with us to iron out the kinks.  It was so nice to be in our home.

I think many of you have gotten the word that THE DOLL LADY, ELINOR PEACE BAILEY will be coming to see us next month.   Details are still up in the air at this time, but she is coming as part of our treat to us.   We will keep you posted.

2006 GALA NEWS

Update - Report by Connie Drew and Betty Finamore, Chairpersons for 2006 Gala -       Report on Gala Meeting of April 17, 2006

Signs: After much discussion we decided to make signs for Classes/Quilt Show/Quilt Auction/Vendors, etc.  The ones made professionally would probably be too costly.  We are thinking of making “pillowcase” type signs from painter’s canvas and stenciling the information and logo.

Karen Reed said she would do embroidery labels.  We decided that the only ones needing embroidery are the ones made by TQG members for the Auction.  We will have other labels printed that say the quilt was displayed at the 4th Biennial Quilt Gala of the Northern Neck.

We are researching cost of an Auction Quilt Catalog

Betty could not attend but sent a report.  We will need overnight hosts for the instructors.  Betty also said we can use a couple more vendors. She will assign spots for vendors soon. She is also looking into Insurance carriers recommended by Hoffman Quilts.

Gail will send Auction Quilt registration forms to the next TQG meeting.

Next priorities:  Publicity, ticket design, Auction catalog

Quilt Workshop News

Mary Sawyer wishes to thank all those who attended the March workshop:  Susan Melton, Jean Everly, Shirley Willmore, Marion Booth, Joanne Roberts, Liz Mesec, Marge Stack, Margaret Cox, Barbara Darden and Nancy Koren.  They completed the red-and-white log cabin quilt.   The Cumberland Star blocks will be sewn into rows and they have begun strip piecing the borders for the Posey Pots quilt.  We have received permission from the publisher of the Posey Pots pattern to use it and sell the quilt made from this pattern.

The next workshop is April 18, 2006 at the White Stone Church of the Nazarene – sponsored by the FKAP Bee.

MINUTES OF THE GUILD MEETING FOR April 4, 2006

President Liz Mesec called the meeting to order at 10:00 AM in the new Transportation Building, Heathsville, Virginia.  She introduced George Beckett, President of the RHHT Foundation who welcomed the Guild to the new building. He thanked members for the purchase of the tables and chairs.

President Mesec expressed pleasure of the Guild to see Peggy MacHale and Marilyn Nolte returning to the meetings.  Nancy Brannon introduced the program”The Quirky Quilters”.

Raffle Quilt:  Joy Young displayed the raffle quilt and suggested we have it machine quilted.  Discussion followed.  Jeanne Rose made a motion that we have the quilt machine quilted.  Sybil Stolzenberg seconded the motion.  Motion carried.

Ways to sell raffle tickets were discussed:  sell tickets in the Tavern store, Farmers Market, craft shows in the area, list on the Tavern website and the Mid-Atlantic Show.  Joy Young will be in charge of coordinating the selling of the tickets.

The March minutes were approved as printed in Loons Lines.

Treasurer report. Cyndi Salesky read the Treasurer’s report for March and the proposed budget for April 2006 - March 2007. Connie Drew made a motion that we accept both reports.  Sybil Stolzenberg seconded.  Reports approved

Louise McIntire reported the membership as 91 members.  The deadline for the Loons Lines will be April 20th.

Report on the Gala:

- Connie Drew asked for volunteers to be quiet angels to help the teachers and audit classes.

- A catalog with pictures and descriptions of the auction quilts will be for sale at the Gala.  We need people to solicit ads in order to pay for the catalog.  Prices for the ads are: ¼ page $25.00, ½ page $ 50.00 and a full page will be $ 100.00.  The price of the ad may be tax deductible.

- Description of the quilt articles to be displayed will be accepted beginning with June meeting and ending with the September meeting.

- Linda McMakin is now accepting donations for the silent auction.

Gala Workshops:   Mary Sawyer thanked all who helped with the workshops. They are working of on a Star block quilt and a Posey Pot quilt.  Next workshop will be held in White Stone on April 18th.   Final date for listing auction quilts in the catalog will be at the September meeting.

President Mesec announced the number of members who have signed up for the Gala classes.  She suggested anyone interested should sign up now before the classes are open to the public.

Gala Committee meets 1 PM the 3rd Monday of each month at the Yellow Cat Saloon.

Education Committee:  President Mesec thanked Faye Page for her workshop on chenille. Faye displayed commercial chenille and chenille made from squares of fabric. Nancy Brannon will present a workshop on trapunto in May.

It was suggested the Guild display some of the Gala auction quilts at the affair.  Kathy also announced that the Foundation has Commemorative Bricks for sale.

Bonnie Page announced that the Quilts of the Old Dominion Virginia Historical Society would be on display March 18-May 31.  The quilts will be rotated June 1-August 30 and September 1-December 3rd.

Historian:  Dottie Perdue has talked with Linda Adams to arrange a display for the Tavern listing the Guilds help in the Foundations projects.

President Mesec will contact George Beckett about hanging quilts from the balcony permanently and securing a key for the Guild.

Corresponding Secretary:  Sybil Stolzenberg sent a thank you note to St. Stephens Church for the use of the meeting hall.   A thank you note was read from Marilyn Nolte thanking the Guild for the cards and prayers during her illness.

VIRGINIA HISTORICAL SOCIETY COVERED IN QUILTS

A new exhibition, Quilts of the Old Dominion, is on display March 18–December 3, 2006

Richmond, VA – The Drunkard’s Path, Mariner’s Compass, Star of Hope, and Goosetracks are making their debut at the Virginia Historical Society this Saturday. For those of you familiar with these traditional patterns, you know this can mean only one thing: Quilts. Quilts of the Old Dominion runs with three rotations through December 3, 2006. This exhibition features quilts made in Virginia before 1900 and selected for display by a committee of the Virginia Consortium of Quilters. There will be three rotations, each displaying twenty quilts at a time: first, March 18 through May 31; second, June 1 through August 30; and third, September 1 through December 3. In each of the three rotations, five of the quilts are modern, showing the progression of art from one hundred years ago to the present day.

"Perhaps the most outstanding in the first rotation is Lone Stars with Appliqué," says Maren Lindberg of the Virginia Consortium of Quilters. "This quilt may be older than the lender thinks it is— one of our best appraisers/historians thinks it's older. Lone Stars are, of course, difficult to make, with all those points that need to be perfectly executed in order to make a visual impact. This one (and the others from this donor) is extremely well done. It has been well taken care of and is in perfect condition."

Other featured patterns include the ever-popular Crazy Quilt, as well as the Noonday, Farmer's Fancy, Ocean Waves, and Old Maid's Ramble. The quilts on display were made in Virginia and each comes with its own story of the woman who crafted it and how it has become a part of the family legacy of the owner. Tree Everlasting, scheduled for the June–August rotation, was made in 1850 in Bonsack, Roanoke County. The quilt maker was born in Bonsack and lived most of her life there. The quilt was on her farm during the Civil War and, family legend has it, was used by a wounded Union soldier, who promised not to burn the farmhouse if he was allowed to stay.

Quilts of the Old Dominion features a number of beautiful, expertly crafted quilts that carry with them not only the loving artwork of the hands that crafted them but also intriguing and memorable stories that warm the heart just as the quilts warms their owners.

Programming for the exhibition includes a gallery walk on Thursday, May 11 at 6:00 p.m. when Eileen "Bunnie" Jordan, noted quilt appraiser, collector, and historian will walk through the first rotation of the exhibition. Ms. Jordan will conduct a second gallery walk on Wednesday, November 8 at noon for the final rotation of quilts. Additionally, the VHS is hosting a Quilt Appraisal on Saturday, May 13 from 10:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. where Ms. Jordan will give 15-minute verbal evaluations of quilts brought in ($15 per item, reservations suggested, visit www.vahistorical.org for details). Finally, the VHS is pleased to host a quilting workshop on Saturday, June 17 from 10:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. when Paula Golden will conduct a hands-on class, "Mastering the Mariner's Compass" design. Reservations are necessary, and the cost of the class is $30 plus a supply list. Please visit our web site or call 804.358.4901 for more details or to reserve your spot in the class.

The Virginia Historical Society is located at 428 N. Boulevard. The 2006 “Quilt-In” will be held on May 16, 2006 at the Transportation Building in Heathsville.   Further details will be available at the May, 2006 TQG meeting.

Oatmeal Cookies

If you like oatmeal cookies – and if you especially love oatmeal cookies that are crispy, you will love those made with the recipe submitted by Jane Fahey.  This recipe is from a 1963 McCall’s Cook Book.  Jane found that she didn’t need the entire cooking time.  Makes about 4 dozen cookies

¾ cup butter or margarine

2-1/2 cups raw rolled oats

½ cup sifted all-purpose flour

1 tsp. cinnamon

½ tsp. salt

½ tsp baking soda

1 cup light brown sugar – firmly packed

1 egg

1 tsp. vanilla extract

1.  Preheat oven to 375 degrees F.

2.  In medium skillet, over medium heat, heat butter until lightly browned.  Be careful not to burn

3.  Add oats, sauté, stirring constantly, until golden – about 5 minutes.  Remove from heat; cool

4.  Meanwhile, sift flour with cinnamon, salt and soda; set aside

5.  In large bowl, combine sugar, egg and vanilla.  With wooden spoon or portable electric mixer at       medium speed, beat until light.

6.  Stir in rolled oats and flour mixture until well combined.

7.  Crop by slightly rounded teaspoonfuls, 3 inches apart onto ungreased cookie sheets.

8.  Bake 10 – 12 minutes or until golden.  Remove to wire rack, cool
